Your cost per click is a confession.

This week's teardown  ·  Rent vs. rank

Your cost per click is a confession.

Hey Reader,

Quick gut check. Go look at your Google Ads bill from last month. Now answer this: how many of those keywords could you be ranking for organically, for free, right now?

If the answer is “I have no idea,” you're not alone. It's the single most common blind spot I see on sales calls. And it's expensive, because every click you pay for on a keyword you could own is rent.

Rent builds equity for the landlord. Not for you.

Here's the reframe I want you to steal this week: your cost per click is not just a bill. It's a confession. When advertisers pay real money for a click, that price is the market telling you exactly how valuable that customer is. Which means your ad account is secretly the best keyword research tool you own, and you already paid for the data.

Your one move for the week

The rent-vs-rank move · five steps
01 Pull your Google Ads search terms report for the last 90 days.
02 Find the terms that are both converting and costing you real money per click.
03 Check their keyword difficulty. Anything at 20 or under goes to the top of your organic list.
04 Ask the intent question: is this person buying, or just browsing? Keep the buyers.
05 Build one genuinely great page for your top buying keyword. Then do the next one.
That's a quarter of work that quietly, permanently lowers your ad bill.

Now, to be clear: I am not telling you to quit paid ads. Paid and organic are teammates, and we've covered on this newsletter exactly where each one earns its place in your budget.

Rent the car while you build the one you own. Just don't rent the same lap forever and call it a strategy.

⚙️ SEO term of the week
Keyword Difficulty
By the book

A score, usually 0 to 100, estimating how hard it is to rank organically for a keyword, based on the authority and quality of the pages currently holding the top positions.

In plain English

Keyword difficulty tells you which races you can actually win. Entering a difficulty-80 term with an average site is showing up to Formula 1 in a minivan: technically you're in the race, practically you're scenery. Terms at 20 and under are the local circuits where most businesses can genuinely podium this season. It's the number that should be driving your content decisions, and it's the number bulk content strategies never check.

How to use it without fooling yourself
Pair it with intent. An easy keyword nobody buys from is an easy waste of a page.
Don't chase volume you can't win. Ten winnable terms beat one trophy term you'll never touch.
Treat scores as estimates, not gospel. Different tools score differently. The direction matters more than the digit.
🔑 The single most revealing question of all
“Which keywords are we paying for that we could realistically win organically, and what's the plan to get there?”
Ask whoever runs your marketing. An integrated team will light up, because this is the game. A paid-only shop will change the subject, because every keyword you start owning is a keyword they stop billing.
