Thousands of clicks. Zero appointments. A real ghost story.

This week's teardown  ·  The conversion graveyard

The ads worked. The page was a graveyard.

Hey Reader,

Quick ghost story for the last week of spooky season, and this one is real.

I looked at a campaign this month that had everything going for it. Thousands of clicks. About four percent of those people made it to the landing page and watched the video. And then zero of them booked an appointment. Not one.

The ads worked. The page was a graveyard. And this is the trap almost everyone falls into: we assume more clicks equal more customers, so we spend to drive traffic to a page that was never built to convert it.

Traffic is not the finish line. It's the starting grid.

Before you spend another dollar sending people to a page, here are the five things I check first:

The five-point page inspection
01 Do you know your actual conversion rate? Not clicks. Not bounce. The percentage of visitors who do the one thing that equals revenue. If you can't say that number, that's the ghost in your funnel.
02 Does the headline match the ad or search that sent them? Broken scent, and they leave.
03 Is the next step obvious in the first screen, or buried at the bottom?
04 Is the page fast, or is it dragging a pile of plugins and oversized images? (The trunk full of bricks strikes again.)
05 Does it speak your customer's words, or your internal jargon?
Fix the page first. Then every click you pay for works harder.

You're not pouring more water into a bucket full of holes. You patched the bucket. That's the whole strategy, and it costs a fraction of what another month of wasted ad spend does.

⚙️ SEO term of the week
Conversion Rate
By the book

The percentage of visitors to a page who complete a desired action, calculated as conversions divided by total visitors. What counts as a conversion is defined by you: a booking, a call, a form fill, a purchase.

In plain English

Conversion rate is the only lap time that pays. Clicks are how many cars showed up to the track; conversion rate is how many crossed the finish line with a customer in the seat. It's also where vanity metrics go to die: a page can win every traffic award and still convert at zero, which is exactly the ghost story above. One honest caveat: a “good” rate varies wildly by industry and offer, so don't chase someone else's benchmark. Beat your own last month.

How to get your number this week
→ Define the one action that equals revenue for each page. One page, one job.
→ Track it as a conversion event in GA4, including the phone calls. If it's not tracked, it didn't happen.
→ Divide conversions by visitors, monthly. That number, trending up or down, is your real scoreboard.
🔑 The single most revealing question of all
“What is this page's conversion rate, and what are we doing to raise it?”
Ask it about every page you're paying to send traffic to. Whoever runs your ads should be able to answer before spending another dollar, and if the answer is a clicks chart, you already know what's happening to the budget. Nobody gets paid for traffic. You get paid for customers.

P.S. If your ads are getting clicks but your phone isn't ringing, you don't need more traffic. You need to go stand in your own conversion graveyard and see what's eating the budget. It's fixable.
