Before You Hire Anyone for AI SEO, Read This

Hey Reader,

AI search is moving fast. ChatGPT is answering questions. Perplexity is citing sources. Google’s AI Overviews are eating the top of the SERP. And every week, a new wave of consultants and agencies are rebranding themselves as AI search experts. Some of them know exactly what they’re doing. Others learned about AI Overviews in a YouTube video last quarter and updated their Canva deck. Your job is knowing the difference before you sign a contract.

🔴 THE FIVE RED FLAGS

Before you commit a single dollar to anyone claiming they’ll rank your brand in AI, watch for these:

1. They can’t explain their process. Vague answers about “leveraging AI signals” aren’t a strategy, they’re a sales pitch. Ask for specifics. If they can’t deliver them, neither can their work.

2. They’re promising speed. Anyone guaranteeing AI visibility in 30, 60, or 90 days is guessing. Building the authority signals that AI systems surface takes time, intention, and a real methodology. It’s not a quick tune, it’s an engine build.

3. They don’t have documented case studies. Logos on a homepage are not proof. Ask for before-and-after evidence. What was the client doing before? What changed? What moved? No receipts = you’re funding their learning curve.

4. They arrived at “AI SEO” without a foundation in technical SEO. The brands showing up in AI Overviews didn’t skip the fundamentals, they mastered them first. If someone can’t talk to you about crawlability, structured data, and E-E-A-T, they’re building on sand.

5. They tell you traditional SEO is dead. It isn’t. AI search systems are built on top of the same trust and authority signals search has always rewarded. Anyone dismissing the foundation is selling you a shortcut you’ll pay for twice.

✅ THE QUESTIONS TO ASK INSTEAD

Before signing anything, get answers to these:

  1. What’s your technical SEO process before you touch AI strategy?
  2. Can you walk me through a brand you’ve helped gain AI citations, specifically what you did?
  3. What tools do you use to measure AI search performance, and how do you report on it?
  4. What does success look like at 90 days, 6 months, and one year?
  5. What would you NOT do for a client who wanted fast results?

That last question? The best strategists answer it confidently. They know where the shortcuts blow tires.

💡 WHAT AI RANKING ACTUALLY REQUIRES

Here’s the honest version, no hype, no fluff. To earn real visibility in AI-generated answers, your brand needs to be citation-worthy.

That means:

✔ A technically clean, crawlable, fast-loading website
✔ Content built around real questions with real depth
✔ Structured data that helps machines understand your authority
✔ E-E-A-T signals woven through your content ecosystem
✔ Legitimate third-party mentions and brand presence
✔ Strong traditional rankings, because AI systems still use them as a signal

This isn’t a sprint. It’s a performance build. And the brands that treat it that way are the ones who actually win.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The AI search opportunity is real. Don’t let the noise around it make you move faster than your due diligence allows. Take your time. Ask hard questions. Demand evidence. The right partner won’t pressure you; they’ll prove themselves to you.

“If you’re not first, you’re last, but you’re not last if you don’t move until you know exactly where you’re going.”

Enjoy the three-day weekend!

SEO Sidekick teaches NAP Principles to business owners

Hey Reader, I want to start this week with a story about two letters. Not two words. Not two sentences. Two letters. A client of mine has been in a newer building for about two years. Great location, established business, solid local presence, the kind of setup that should be ranking consistently in local map results. But over time, something quietly went wrong. Local map rankings started slipping. Nothing dramatic. No algorithm announcement. No obvious cause. Just a slow, steady decline that...

SEO Sidekick educates business owners on metrics that matter.

Hey Reader, I need to tell you about something that happened with a client this week. He forwarded me an email. One of those cold outreach pitches, the kind that promises to rank your site at the top of Google and in AI search in two weeks. Bold claim. Aggressive timeline. And to back it up, they included a screenshot. The screenshot showed a metric climbing beautifully. Big numbers. Impressive trend line. The kind of chart that makes a business owner's eyes light up. The metric they were...

Hey Reader, I'm bringing something back this week. Early in this newsletter I used to drop an SEO Term of the Week, a single concept, broken down in plain English, explained in a way that actually sticks. No jargon. No fluff. Just clarity. Given everything we've been talking about lately, AI search, authority signals, what it actually takes to get cited, it felt like exactly the right moment to revive it. Because this week's term sits at the center of everything. This week's SEO Term of the...
